The New Girls

February 20th, 2012 3 comments

We were down to 3 girls and 4 boys in the hen house. Not good. That’s counting Jill Halfpenny who is hopping around on one leg. It was time to do something about it.  We wanted to get more bantams but that’s not so easy around here. We took a trip to Dookinella on Achill Island and now have 6 new girls. One is a bantam and the other 5 are normal sized. They are huge by comparison. Twice the size of our roosters :-). One of our new hens is an Araucana or at least in part. She lays green eggs!

The new girls with one of our roosters who's trying hard to get in their good books. Trudi looks on.

The Araucana on the left has a beard. I'm thinking of calling the one on the right Pavlova.

Poor Jill Halfpenny is probably not long for this world. With all of the excitement yesterday she decided to take a trip outside. I thought I would capture her and her lovely whiskers before it's too late.

Here's Jill again next to the new Araucana. She's very small by comparison but very dignified.

Green egg!

A bit rude!

My Brazilian Twitter friend @rejaneborges works at Obvious Mag. A great site that features all kinds of interesting stories, often arts and culture related. She was kind enough to feature some of my work. Here’s the story:

I was telling Al about it and he was asking me what it actually said. I speak Spanish but not Portugese and so, wasn’t exactly sure. He was quiet for a while but then started bawling with laughter. He had decided to use Google Chrome’s translator. I had never tried that. I didn’t even know such a thing existed. This is what it said:

Fight!

fight

You can tell it’s springtime. Luckily no one got hurt although these fights are very vicious. We have 4 cockerels the moment so fights are inevitable. Soon we’ll know who’ll be in charge this year and then things will calm down in the hen house.

Good news from Westport!

September 6th, 2010 2 comments

My exhibition of paintings at The Creel, Westport has been extended until the end of the month. We went in there on Saturday to take the pictures down but we’ve agreed to leave them there a little longer. Trish and James have been so kind. There was also a little money waiting there for me because I’ve sold some! Not bad eh? I’m really pleased. Hope they are happy in their new homes! Of course we had to have lunch while we were there. For once I was able to pay! As always it was delicious.

The Chicken News

August 6th, 2010 2 comments

chicksinaugust2So remember those cute little chicks, born in May? Well look at them now. They’re a bit like surly teenagers, which I suppose they are really. We still have no idea what sex they are so we’ve not named them yet.

Meanwhile in the hen house, our little Janet has two tiny chicks of her own. I must say, since we introduced new cockerels, Jedward, there has been a lot of activity.

Sad news from the hen house

June 29th, 2010 2 comments

What do they say about counting chickens? Well it had to happen I suppose. The little runt chick died yesterday. Still 6 chicks out of 7 eggs is not bad going. Fingers (and claws) crossed for the rest.

Good behaviour in the hen house for once!

For once, ‘bad mother’ Calypso is looking after her chicks properly! Regular readers will be aware that in previous years she has abandoned her chicks and on some occasions, pecked them and thrown them out of the nest. This has meant that in the past, we’ve had to try and raise the chicks ourselves in a cardboard box in the kitchen. This always causes problems and definitely reduces the chances of survival for the little cuties, especially when it comes to the time we have to re-introduce the chicks to the flock.

This year however, she has behaved beautifully. She has 7 chicks. On the day that she left her nest, she left one chick for dead but it recovered after Al discovered it in time and I kept it nestled in my bra for a couple of hours (yes, really). She accepted the chick back and has been looking after them like a proud mother. In the last few days she has brought them out into the run for the first time and has been demonstrating scratching techniques and other hen-like behaviour. It’s been a joy to watch.

We haven’t even thought about naming the new chicks yet as we have no idea what sex they are… In the past, my eagerness to name them has resulted in hens called Mick and Dave and a cockerel named La Toya! Naming suggestions are welcome.

Here she is leading them into the hen house. The one in the love heart is my special favourite.

Summer Exhibition

June 9th, 2010 3 comments

Full-sized, stretched canvas prints of some of my paintings for I Love Mayo have gone up on the walls at my favourite café, The Creel at The Quay in Westport. They will be up on the walls until September. I’m particularly pleased with my set of 6 paintings of some of our cockerels. They look great all hung together. As well as large prints, smaller mounted prints are available.

You can see enlarged versions of my pictures on I Love Mayo.

I’m really excited (and a bit nervous) to have my work on show and very grateful to Trisha and James at The Creel for being so supportive.

Just a quickie

View from the front of our house

I do still have things to say about RTÉ.ie and alcohol advertising. I just don’t know where to start! I was happy to get a response but I’m left feeling quite deflated and annoyed by it. Will have a go soon.

Meanwhile, we’re trying to get the house as watertight as possible for the winter. The days are really starting to shorten now. The chickens are doing well. Of this year’s chicks, it’s clear now that Bruno is definitely a boy and that Janet probably is also. Hopefully Latoya and Tito are girls. It’s early days for Tito still.

We have huge changes to the site coming soon. List item numbering will be ‘rolled out’ (as Al would say) across the site soon. Numbering will mean that items can be inserted into a particular place in a list. You’ll also be able to make list items (or just selected text), bold or italic or ‘tada’…. a link!

The picture above was taken on one of our last summery days (Note: Trudi’s head).

Chick Update: September

l-r Trudi, Janet, La Toya and Tito

We’ve been leaving the hens in the run recently as little Tito is too small to be roaming free outside even with his mother.  There was sunshine today and who knows when we’ll have some more?  The weather was nice enough for me to sit out on scarecrow duty so I opened up the run. Tito has now had his first trip out. He didn’t venture very far, but it’s a start. As you can see; Janet and La Toya are growing up fast and Trudi is still fascinated.  I still don’t have a clue what sex any of these birds are!
