The title "Prime Minister" was first used in the Kingdom of Great Britain as a term of abuse for Robert Harley, a leading politician during the reign of Queen Anne. However, modern historians generally apply the title of "First" Prime Minister to Sir Robert Walpole who was appointed by King George I in 1721.
